Artists Residency in a Florentine Olive Grove
I have just returned from Italy where I was invited to be artist in residence at harvest time in a four hundred year old Florentine olive. I am so grateful for this opportunity. It is so beautiful. I filled three sketch books and I will be making some paintings in my studio from my felt memory and these sketches.

Forging Ahead!
Unveiled! The three new entrance arches to Godolphin Road Community Garden, which is part of Hammersmith Community Gardens Association were installed as part of their 40th anniversary. I  made the original three arches from MDF as part of my artist residency there twenty five years ago, so it is especially lovely to return there.
My drawings were again skilfully forged by blacksmith Henrich Zelinka.

I am delighted to have received a new private garden railing design commission. I have always had a tremendous love of birds and I often draw them. For this commission I wove the house number 54 into the image of the bird. Blacksmith Henrich Zelinka made the railing in his forge in Barton near Cambridge.

CONVERSATION PIECE

An exhibition of work by Amanda Lebus and Emily Johns exploring thematic connections.
Emily and I had an early working relationship post art school where we collaborated and inspired each other. Emily remembers how I would observe and draw people on the tube,
hand in pocket, using my finger as a pencil and my thigh as a sketch pad, training my eye when I was too shy to draw in public. I remember Emily teaching me lino etchng using caustic soda and a feather to clear the bubbles from the plate. She was illustrating the poems of John Heath Stubbs, and her images really moved me.
We are both artists whose work spans different art forms and we last exhibited together at Torriano Meeting House in 1996.
This exhibition is an opportunity for our images to talk to each other across time.

Torriano Meeting House, 99 Torriano Avenue, London NW5 2RX
from 11th to 31st August 2024, opening times below:

Sunday 11th August 3-6pm: Opening
Saturday 31st August 3-6pm: Closing tea and puppet-tea when we shall share some shadow puppetry.
20th August 3-6pm and 21st August 2-6pm: Inky Converse-ations / Con-versations. On these two afternoons we will both be in the gallery with brush and pen and paper, responding to each others work with inky improvisations.

Three Branches Exhibition
September 2023

Picture
Three artists who are gardeners and gardeners who make art will exhibit paintings and prints at Islington Arts Factory for a week from Friday, September 22nd 2023.
After this Summer of fire and floods, worldwide heatwaves and sullen British damp, a pause for pleasure in the twin investments of studio and allotment. Gardeners work with soil and season; artists craft from conditions of the body, harvesting feeling into work and working through feeling to make art. Not all seeds that are sewn flourish. Not all sketches set fruit as finished works. For both garden and artwork, a regular practice of focus and attention matters. The notion of control is an illusion - we work with what we find and find ourselves collaborators with nature. These three women artists find expression, nourishment and beauty into their gardens that spills into their art.
